Pass the Phone Drinking Game
The pass the phone drinking game takes the simplest party mechanic there is, read a prompt, pick a person, hand over the phone, and adds one house rule: whoever gets picked takes a sip. That's the entire rulebook. No cards to shuffle, no cups to arrange, no app downloads for the group. One phone moves around the circle and the prompts do the rest.
Below you'll find the standard rules, the most popular rule variations, and 40 prompts written specifically for a drinking round: callouts, confessions, and "we all know it's you" picks. You can read them straight off this page, or run the round through the Pass the Phone app, which shuffles prompts automatically and shows a reveal of who picked whom at the end. And if half your group isn't drinking, there's a variant for that too, it works just as well with water, soda, or a points tally.

The base game is unchanged: 3 to 8 players, one phone. The holder reads a prompt out loud, picks the player it fits best, and passes the phone to them. That player drinks, then reads the next prompt and makes the next pick. The most common house rules: if the group loudly disagrees with a pick, the reader drinks instead; if you get picked twice in a row, you pass one sip to a player of your choice; and mutual picks (two players who chose each other during the round) finish their drinks at the reveal.
The Pass the Phone app runs the same loop with auto-shuffled prompts, a reveal screen showing who picked whom, and a Wrapped-style summary at the end, which doubles as the final scoreboard for the round. It works fully offline, so it holds up at house parties, pregames, and cabin weekends with no signal. Not drinking? Swap sips for points: most picks by the end of the round loses (or wins, depending on how your group sees it).

How do you play the pass the phone drinking game?
One person holds the phone and reads a prompt like "Pass the phone to the one who always says 'one more round'." They pick whoever it fits and hand over the phone. The picked player takes a sip, reads the next prompt, and passes it on. The round ends when the prompts run out, and if you're playing in the Pass the Phone app, the reveal screen shows who picked whom and who got picked the most.
How is it different from the regular pass the phone game?
The mechanic is identical, the only addition is the drink rule: getting picked costs a sip. That single rule changes the energy, because every pick now has stakes and the room gets louder with each prompt. Groups usually play a regular round first, then switch the drink rule on once everyone knows the loop.
Can you play it without alcohol?
Yes, and plenty of groups do. Swap sips for water, soda, or a points tally, the picks and the reveal are what actually make the game, not the drinks. The prompt list above works unchanged either way, and the app never requires or references drinking, so a sober round looks exactly the same on screen.
How many people do you need?
Three is the minimum for the passing to feel fun, four to six is the sweet spot, and the app supports up to eight players on one phone. Bigger group? Split into two circles and compare reveal screens at the end, the two "phone magnets" can settle it in a final round.
Is there a dedicated drinking mode in the app?
No, and that's deliberate. The app ships party, family, couples, and adult prompt modes, and the drinking layer is a house rule you add on top of whichever mode fits your group. Most groups run Party Starter mode with the drink rule, and switch to the Spicy mode (premium) later in the night. Drink responsibly, and only if you're of legal age where you are.
